Changing face of Restaurants. A new challenge.

We are all getting used to staying in being the new going outright? What happens when we are free on the Tiers and Tribulations of COVID restrictions? What will the emerging independent Restaurant of Cafe now face? Here is a round-up of what we have discovered.

On-premise vs off-premise dining will be crucial. Countless restaurateurs never thought to add delivery services to their business plan, but the likelihood is to keep them going to remain profitable and capable of growth.

Independent restaurants have had the hardest time surviving against the COVID-19 backdrop. Against the big chain competition, they have smaller pockets and less contingency, and why differentiation will need to be at the top of their list from 2021 onwards. Re-engineering of menus: shareable options may become a thing of the past for some markets, and the rise of family meal boxes for takeout is another signal that menus need to be revamped.

Goodbye communal tables: social distancing rules will remain in place for a while to come in most countries, but even after government protocols are lifted, communal tables may become a thing of the past, which will call for a rearrangement of seating and the layout in many venues. Zero-contact technology will prevail: from contactless payment methods to automated check-in and chatbots, a technology which minimises human contact will continue to prevail.

As well as this, independents would do well to deep dive into consumer trends that are likely to emerge from the post COVID era. Some examples are;

  1. at home experiences
  2. new booking trends
  3. clean dining
  4. sustainability
  5. remote working environments
  6. cloud/dark kitchens

While there will likely be a drive to support local trade post-COVID. What about the customers that have been lost? Will they return? Research suggests that on reopening doors whenever that may be. Independents may have to look at how they further their reach to find new business.
